Choosing where to camp in the Belgian Ardennes

The Belgian Ardennes cover the south of Wallonia: deep valleys, forested plateaus and stone villages. Campsites vary widely, from the small family site to the large estate with rental accommodation. The right choice depends mostly on the river or massif you are aiming for, on your equipment (tent, caravan, motorhome) and on your constraints (dog, children, travelling without a car).

This regional guide gives the pointers. The detail of the Semois valley, which we know best, is on its own page, with a page for each village. We have no partnership with the campsites mentioned and we do not publish their prices: they change every season.

Quick answer. For a first time, the Semois valley is the best-documented area on this site: Vresse-sur-Semois and its villages, Bouillon. For the Meuse and the Lesse, see Dinant. Always confirm opening dates, prices, dogs and motorhomes with the campsite.

Choose according to your profile

Which type of outdoor accommodation?

Not a ranking, but the questions to ask depending on how you travel.

Classic campsite in the Belgian Ardennes

Classic campsite

Pitch for a tent, caravan or motorhome

Ask about the size and shade of the pitches, the distance to the sanitary blocks, electrical hook-ups and access to the river.

Chalet or mobile home in the Belgian Ardennes

Chalet or mobile home

Fixed accommodation on a campsite

Some campsites offer them. Check the minimum stay, the linen provided and the cancellation terms on the establishment's website.

Equipped tents, cabins, bubbles

See our page on unusual accommodation in the Semois valley. Conditions and prices are available from each host.

With a dog

The policy is specific to each establishment: admission, compulsory leash, possible supplement, number of animals. Find out before you come, and keep your dog on a leash in protected natural areas.

In a motorhome or van

Not all campsites accept them. Ask whether there is a waste-disposal point, electrical hook-ups, and whether road access suits a long vehicle (deep valleys, narrow roads).

Rules to know

Camping outside a campsite: what you need to know

In Wallonia, you do not pitch your tent just anywhere. We do not detail the regulations here, as they change: we indicate where to check them.

To avoid

Setting up a tent or vehicle for the night in the forest or by a river outside a place provided for it: this is regulated, and the environment is fragile (protected areas, fire risk).

Provided framework

Official bivouac areas exist for walkers and cyclists, with their own conditions. They are not intended for vehicles.

To check

The Département de la Nature et des Forêts (DNF), the nature park or National Park concerned and the municipality. In dry periods, fire bans may apply.

Our page bivouacking in the Ardennes covers the question for the Semois valley.

Precautions

Nature, weather and safety when camping

Ticks

Ticks are present in forests and meadows. Covering clothing, inspection at the end of the day, removal with a tick remover, disinfection, and medical advice if redness appears in the following days.

Weather and humidity

The Ardennes climate is changeable and humidity is high. Avoid hollows where water collects and pitches under large trees in bad weather, and never use a stove inside a tent.

Rivers and floods

A pitch near the water depends on the season. Ask the campsite how it handles high water.

Hunting in autumn and winter

Hunts take place in the forests. Check the official calendars before leaving and stay on the paths.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about camping in the Belgian Ardennes

Can you camp freely in the Belgian Ardennes?

No, not just anywhere. In Wallonia, camping outside an equipped site is regulated: there are official bivouac areas reserved for walkers and cyclists, with their own conditions. Check the rules with the Département de la Nature et des Forêts (DNF), the nature park concerned and the municipality. Our page on bivouacking in the Ardennes sums it up.

Where to camp in the Semois valley?

Campsites can be found in Vresse-sur-Semois (for example Camping Huttopia Vallée de la Semois, Rue de Lingue 50) and in Membre (Camping La Bonne Heure, Rue de Charleville 2), as well as in Alle-sur-Semois and Bouillon. Each village has its own page on this site.

Are dogs allowed on Ardennes campsites?

This is each establishment's own decision (admission, leash, supplement, number of animals). Ask the campsite before you come. In protected natural areas, keep your dog on a leash.

Can you come with a motorhome or a van?

It depends on the campsite: some welcome motorhomes, others do not. Ask whether there is a waste-disposal point and electrical hook-ups. Overnight parking in the forest and the bivouac areas are not intended for vehicles.

Where can you find campsite prices?

We do not publish prices: they change every season and must be checked at the source. Consult the campsite's official website or contact it directly.

How do you protect yourself from ticks while camping?

Wear covering clothing, stay on the paths and check yourself at the end of the day. If bitten, remove the tick with a tick remover, disinfect, and see a doctor if redness appears in the following days.

Do you need to take hunting into account?

Yes, in autumn and winter, hunts take place in the Ardennes forests. Check the calendars published by the official bodies before an outing or a bivouac, and stay on the paths.
