In brief
ArdennenBelgie.be is a travel information site about the Belgian Ardennes, with a clear centre of gravity: the Semois valley, its slate villages, wooded loops, viewpoints and national park. It is written for anyone planning a weekend, a longer stay or a single day out in the region who wants to understand a place before going: what to see, how to get there, when to go, where to stay, what to taste and what is worth knowing before setting off.
The site is published by an individual working independently, not by a company or a tourist office. Texts appear under the collective byline of the ArdennenBelgie.be editorial team, rather than under the name of an individual expert whose background we could not document. This page explains that choice, and the following pages spell out its consequences: the methodology describes how we check things, the legal notice gives the legal framework, and the contact page explains how to write to us.
What we do not claim to be: a tourist office, a public body, a mountain guide, a rescue service or a legal adviser. We are a content publisher that gathers, checks and presents information about an area we know well, and we cite our sources.
Who publishes the site
ArdennenBelgie.be is published by a natural person working on a self-employed basis based in Vresse-sur-Semois (Namur province, Belgium). The identification details that Belgian law requires for a website (publisher identity, contact details, company number where applicable) are on the legal notice page, which is the reference on the matter. We keep them in one place to avoid any contradiction between pages.

Why a collective byline?
We prefer an honest byline to a flattering one. A travel site that invents an “expert” with a photo, qualifications and years of experience misleads its readers, and search engines know it. Here, every page is published under the responsibility of the editorial team: the person who runs the site gathers the information, cross-checks it against identified public sources, writes, proofreads and publishes. When a piece of information comes from a third party (a park, a municipality, a tourist office, an operator), we say so and point to them. You therefore always know who is claiming what.
We deliberately mention no length of experience, no visitor figures and no award that we could not document here. If such things become relevant one day, they will be published with supporting evidence; until then, it is our methods and our sources, described in detail, that justify the trust you can place in the site.
The area we cover
The heart of the site is the Semois valley, the winding river that crosses the south of Luxembourg province and the south-west of Namur province before flowing into France and joining the Meuse. Its deep meanders, broadleaf forests, slate-fronted villages and ridges with much-photographed panoramas make up one of the most recognisable landscapes in the Ardennes. We give priority to the villages of the lower and middle Semois: Vresse-sur-Semois, Bouillon, Alle-sur-Semois, Bohan, Rochehaut, Poupehan, Membre, Herbeumont, Corbion and Frahan.
As topics require, the site then extends to other parts of the Belgian Ardennes: Dinant and the Meuse valley, La Roche-en-Ardenne, Han-sur-Lesse, Namur and Spa. We have no ambition to cover “all of Belgium” or every place to stay or eat in the region. We prefer to cover fewer topics, with dated sources, rather than publish generic lists that age badly.
The Semois valley is a sensitive area: nature reserves, Natura 2000 sites, public forests managed by the DNF (Wallonia’s nature and forests department), and nesting areas for protected species such as the black stork. This shapes our editorial line, described below: we do not promote a place without saying how to visit it without harming it.
Our editorial line
We follow a short series of principles, kept simple on purpose so that any reader can check them.
1. Be useful before being salesy
Every page must answer a concrete question that a visitor really asks: “what to see in Bouillon in one day?”, “where to park for the Frahan loop?”, “where to stay without a car?”, “which season is best for the morning mists?”. A page that exists only to carry a keyword has no place here. We avoid padded texts, unsupported superlatives (“the most beautiful”, “unmissable”) and lists of twenty places where nothing stands out.
2. Say what we know, and where we know it from
Verifiable facts (altitude, distance, protection status, published opening hours, accessibility) are tied to a public source. Opinions (“a remarkable view”, “muddy stretch after rain”) are presented as such, with the context needed to put them in perspective: season, weather, fitness level required. When we do not know, we write so, and we point to the competent body.
3. Respect the place and its residents
The Semois is a place where people live and a natural environment, not a backdrop. We recall the rules on access to forests, respect for private property, the ban or regulation of bivouacking and the need for quiet around wildlife. We give no precise location for sensitive sites (nests, stations of rare species) and we avoid steering visitors towards fragile spots.
4. Do not rate what we cannot measure
You will find no stars, no scores out of ten and no “top 10” rankings presented as objective assessments. We describe criteria (accessibility, atmosphere, seasonal conditions, suitability for a given audience) and let everyone decide. Nor does the site publish customer reviews or testimonials that we could not authenticate.
5. Date what may change
A footbridge may close for works, a path may be diverted, a business may change its hours. Pages carry a date of last check, and the most volatile information (opening hours, prices, seasonal openings) comes with a pointer to the official source. The method is detailed on the methodology page.
What you will find on the site
The site is organised in sections that match how a trip is actually prepared:
- Towns and villages: profiles of localities, from the ranking of the most beautiful Semois villages to more detailed pages such as Vresse-sur-Semois or Bouillon. General entry point: what to see in the Semois valley.
- Landmarks: viewpoints, bridges, castles, abbeys and heritage, with a guide to places in the Ardennes that serves as an index.
- Nature: the national park, wildlife and plants, Natura 2000 sites, and an encyclopedia of the valley.
- Activities: walking and the GR16, cycling, RAVeL and mountain biking, itinerary ideas such as the weekend in the Semois.
- Accommodation: guides to choosing where to stay and where to camp.
- Local food: regional specialities and places to eat, for example Ardennes specialities.
Every section is available in French, Dutch, German and English. The main menu and the footer list all the pages.
Editorial content, commercial partnerships and other sites: what is kept separate
This is the point on which a reader is entitled to be most demanding. Here is our rule, stated plainly.

To date, ArdennenBelgie.be has no commercial partner: no advertising, no affiliate links, no sponsored content, no commission and no benefit in kind. If a partnership were ever to exist, it would be flagged explicitly before the content concerned and this page would be updated.
In practice: a business cannot buy its place, its wording or its ranking in an ArdennenBelgie.be editorial guide. If some form of advertising or partnership ever exists on the site, it will be displayed as such, kept apart from the editorial text and mentioned in the legal notice. As of the check date shown at the top of the page, the site presents no customer reviews or ratings and displays no sponsored content.
About kayaking and neighbouring sites
Some readers arrive here after visiting a site devoted to kayaking down the Semois. That site, Kayak Belgique, is a separate site: it has its own editorial line, its own terms and its own responsibility. ArdennenBelgie.be is neither its publisher, nor a subsidiary, nor a commercial partner in the editorial sense. When we mention kayaking, it is one activity among others in the area, treated with the same criteria as walking or cycling, and any link to that site is a simple external pointer, flagged as such. For any question about a booking, a price or a kayak trip, please consult that site, not this one. No payment or commission is attached to the links we place to that site or to other sites.
The sources we rely on
We favour official, public, identifiable sources. They are cited on the pages concerned, and the methodology page explains how we rank them. The main ones:
- Parc national de la Vallée de la Semois: boundaries, visitor rules, trails and news of the national park.
- VisitWallonia: official listings of attractions, accommodation and heritage in Wallonia.
- Service public de Wallonie (SPW): official regional information: environment, mobility, regulations.
- RAVeL — réseau autonome de voies lentes: developed cycling and walking routes, condition of sections.
- Département de la Nature et des Forêts (DNF): public forests, hunting, woodland access, forestry rules.
- Natura 2000 en Wallonie: protected sites, habitats and species, maps and protection regimes.
- The municipalities concerned (Vresse-sur-Semois, Bouillon, Herbeumont, Florenville and others): orders, works, events and local regulations, on their respective official sites.
These are simple external links: they do not load any third-party content on our pages, and these bodies are not responsible for what we write. We do not claim to speak on their behalf.
Updates and corrections
Travel information goes out of date quickly. We review pages on two triggers: a review schedule (the most visited or most sensitive pages first, such as those that depend on opening hours or closures) and events (an announced closure, a change in regulations, a reader’s report). The “Checked on…” date at the top of a page shows the last editorial review, not the last layout change. Details are in the methodology.
If you spot an error, a dead link, out-of-date information or a wording that seems unfair to a place or an operator, write to us at [email protected], giving the page address and, if possible, the source that contradicts our text. We check, then we correct. A substantive correction (a figure, an access rule, safety) comes with an updated check date.
We never alter a text to make it more flattering at the request of the person it describes, unless the original information was wrong or out of date. Legal rights of reply and rectification are of course respected.
What the site is not, and its limits
- Not an official source. For a regulation, an opening time or a closure, the official source always prevails. We cite it so that you can consult it.
- Not a safety service. Walks, forest outings and water or outdoor activities carry risks. Our descriptions are informative: always assess your own level, the weather and the state of the terrain on the day.
- Not an exhaustive list. We do not list every place to stay, restaurant or producer. The absence of a business is not a judgement.
- No guarantee of absolute up-to-dateness. Despite the dated check, something may have changed since. Contacting the place directly remains the best check before travelling.

Language versions
The site exists in French, Dutch, German and English. The Belgian Ardennes welcome many Dutch-, German- and English-speaking visitors, and each section is offered in those languages so they need not guess. When a page does not yet exist in a language, the link points to the French version rather than to an empty page. If two versions differ, the most recently updated one prevails; please tell us about the discrepancy.
