The places that shape the Ardennes

Some places are recognisable at a glance: a meander seen from a lookout, a woven-wood bridge across the river, a castle clinging to its rock. They make you want to stop, walk or take photographs, and often shape a whole day. This page gathers them and links to a detailed guide for each one.

We have split the sites into two families. The first brings together viewpoints and landscape structures: panoramas over the Semois meanders, bridges and footbridges, the sheep island, and places suited to photographing mist. They are usually reached on foot, sometimes at the end of a path, and are best visited with the season and the weather in mind. The second family covers built heritage: castles and citadels, abbeys, a former slate quarry and a motor-racing circuit. These sites have opening hours, visiting conditions and sometimes prices that you need to check before you go.

Each guide says where the place is, how to get there and what you can see, with a look at local history when it helps make sense of the visit. We also point out precautions: suitable footwear for a path, care near a drop, respect for protected areas and private land. Where useful, the pages mention nearby walks or villages so that you can combine several stops without multiplying journeys.
